ACCOMMODATION MUDGEE

Previously the Sandbourne Hotel and, before that, St Aloysius School. The French poet Paul-Marie Verlaine arrived in Bournemouth in 1876, not long after he had been freed from a Belgian prison for shooting his homosexual lover Arthur Rimbauld, to take up a teaching position here. During his two-and-a-half years here, Verlaine wrote another successful collection of poems, Sagesse, including two about the town – one simply called Bournemouth and the other La mer de Bournemouth. The blue plaque was put up at the end of 2000 but the 140 year old building was torn down in 2006.

People from Wellington Court sheltered/retirement housing scheme, 10 Poole Road, contributed to the design of large murals decorating the hoardings around the site of the Cadogan Hotel, 8 Poole Road, when it was being demolished. Artist Jeff Pigott spent two days ‘on site' at Cadogan Hotel talking to Wellington Court residents and some of the ideas and stories exchanged during that time are reflected in these designs which were approved by residents and developer, Chesterford Properties, who funded the project.

It is now the Premiere Inn.
